Hana Lava Tube

Explore the incredible underground world of the Hana Lava Tube, one of the world’s largest lava tubes! Walking the winding trails of this ancient subterranean river of Lava is fun, safe, and easy. Liquid rock flowing through the passages one thousand years ago has cooled into myriads of beautiful stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone. There’s no need for sweaters or jackets—the cave averages a perfect temperature of 68˚F year round, and there are no bats or mosquitoes in the cave. The pathway through the cave is of smooth cinders and is easily negotiable.
The Self-Guided Cave Tour is offered every day of the year between 10:30am and 4pm. Reservations aren’t required — just show up between those hours and you can go in immediately. No hanging around waiting for the next tour! They’ll set you up with LED flashlights (mega bright), and down you go. Brand new aluminum handrails guide you through with dozens of signs posted along the way to explain the geology and various speleothems (cave formations). This tour usually lasts about 30-45 minutes. Even though reservations aren’t required, or taken, you may give them a call ahead during periods of extreme weather to be sure they’re going to be open. Best of all, the cost for the tour is only $11.99 per person!
They’re located at 205 Ulaino Road in Hana (turn onto Ulaino Road at mile marker 31, and go 4/10 mile to the Hana Lava Tube). If you have any questions, call them at (808) 248-7308 or check out their website at www.mauicave.com.
